Chapter Fourteen – Sadie

She returned, dressed in the clothes Lana had loaned her, to be confronted by Lana herself, with Jason by her side.

“You look much better this morning,” Lana held up a striped canvas bag. “I’ve brought you some more clothes. Just until you get yourself situated.”

“Thank you.” Sadie accepted the clothes from Lana, feeling awkward. The sooner this was over, and she had access to her own stuff, the better. “It’s so kind and thoughtful.”

“It’s nothing.” Lana looked from Sadie to Gunner and back again.

Sadie shuffled uneasily on the spot, unused to being the center of attention, but she was certain Gunner had already filled Jason and Lana in on what had happened. Sadie’s cheeks flushed pink. Or maybe the two visitors could tell she’d had sex with Gunner, a man she’d known less than twenty-four hours.

“Coffee?” Gunner asked lightly and turned around to walk into the house. “We can talk inside.”

Sadie let out a long breath. She certainly preferred the idea of Gunner telling them about the professor’s findings than anything else. “Once this is all cleared up, I’ll return everything to you clean and laundered.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Lana insisted. She lowered her voice and added, “We went into town on the way here and I bought you some new undergarments.” She gave a knowing smile. “There are some things you can’t borrow.”

“Thanks.” Tears pricked Sadie’s eyes. “Everyone has been so nice.”

“We’re here to help,” Jason said gently. “It’s what we do, and you are one of us now.”

“Whether you like it or not,” Lana laughed. “Sorry, I couldn’t resist.” Her expression sobered. “You’re lucky, Sadie. You’ve caught yourself one of the good guys, and his friends aren’t so bad either.”

“You caught yourself a good guy, too, Lana. Of course, it helps that he’s also a millionaire,” Jason replied.

“Retired millionaire,” Lana corrected.

“He gave it all up for love,” Jason teased.

“You’re just jealous, man, because you are the only one here who does not have a mate,” Gunner teased.

“Ah, I’m too old and too set in my ways,” Jason insisted.

Gunner gave his friend a knowing look. Despite his insistence that he was too old, Sadie sensed Jason would love to find his mate, the woman of his dreams. She smiled to herself. Sadie would never in a million years have picked herself out as being the woman of any man’s dreams and yet here she was.

The smile left her lips. She’d also never in a million years thought that Professor Augustine would have ended up dead at his home.

“When the right woman comes along,” Lana was saying, “You will soon realize you are neither too old nor too set in your ways.” She wagged her finger at Jason. “You just wait and see.”

“I’ll wait for that day.” Jason nodded his head as Gunner went to the cupboard and took down four coffee mugs. “Here, get it while it’s hot.”

“Do you want to tell me more details about our visit to the professor’s house?” Jason asked, glancing at Sadie.
